Game Development – Creation of Alternate Worlds.

Game Development

The game development is the activity which is designed and created a video game, from initial concept to the game in its final version. This is a multidisciplinary activity, involving computer professionals, design, sound, acting, and so on. The video game development usually follows this process:

Conception of the idea of the game

Design

Planning

Testing

Production

Maintenance

The process is similar to the creation of software in general, although it differs in the large amount of creative input (music, story, character designs, levels, etc.) required. The development also varies depending on the target platform (PC, mobile, console), gender (real-time strategy, rpg, adventure games, platforms, etc.) and the visual (2d, 2.5d, 3d).

Conception

At this stage it is necessary to define the key aspects that make up the game, among which are:

Gender: In which genre or genres will Develop the game. Does not correspond to a genus known, you must specify the features.

Game play: what will generate fun when playing.

Story board: Some loose ideas about how the game should look like in terms of characters, setting, music and more.

Design

In this phase, detailed all the elements that make up the game, giving a clear picture to all members of the Developer about how they are. These elements are:

History

How they unfold the game’s characters and world history represented progress. Not all games have a history.

Concept Art

It sets the general appearance of the game. At this stage a group of artists responsible for viewing or conceptualizing characters, settings, creatures, items, etc. These artists are based on original ideas of the creators and then delivered a series of proposals print or digital how the game will look. Then the art director is responsible to choose from the options those that adhere more to the original idea. Sometimes conceptual artists remain throughout the production process, but usually is only involved in the early stages.

Sound

Detailed description of all the sound elements that the game needs to complete it. Voices, environmental sounds, sound effects and music.

Gameplay

Is the specification of the overall functioning of the game. Is dependent on gender and indicates how the different entities interact within the virtual game, ie, the rules governing it.

Design programming

Describe how the game will be implemented in a real machine (PC, console, mobile phone, etc.) through a programming language and following a specific methodology. Usually in this phase generate UML diagrams that describe the static and dynamic operation, interaction with users and different states will go through the game as software.

Of all the design phase is necessary to generate a document called “Document Design”, which contains all the specifications of art, mechanical and programming.

Planning

This phase identifies the tasks necessary for the implementation of the game and shared among the various components of the development team. It also sets deadlines for the implementation of these key tasks and meetings, with the help of diagramming tools for activities such as GANTT and PERT.

Production

Here we perform all the tasks specified in the planning phase, guided by fundamental design document. This includes among other things, the coding of the program, creating sprites, tiles and 3D models, sound recording, voices and music, the creation of tools to speed the development process, among others.

Programming

Most games are programmed using C + + language as it is a high-level language that allows quick access to the hardware components of a computer or game console that makes it more accessible.

Illustration

2D games should be illustrated by experienced artists who work taking into account the technical limitations of the hardware on which to run the game, this includes: Number of colors available, size of sprites, final resolution of the sprites and formats to use. 2D artists are also makers of the game animations.

Interface

It’s the way that will be the elements of the GUI and HUD, through which the user will interact with the game.

3D modeling and animation

The artists use commercial tools such as three-dimensional modeling and animation 3DS Max, Maya, XSI / Softimage, Blender, etc. But besides using internally developed tools that facilitate some of the most common process of creating games.

Sound Design

Sound engineers are responsible for creating sounds for each object or character in the game. They can create sounds from scratch or use ambient sounds and modify them as needed.

Testing

As in other types of software, video games must go through a stage where correcting the errors inherent to the programming process and unlike those, the games require a refinement of its fundamental characteristic, to produce interactive fun (gameplay ). Generally this step is carried out in two phases:

Alpha testing: are conducted by a small group of people who are involved earlier in the development, which may include artists, programmers, coordinators, and so on. The purpose is to correct the most serious defects and improve gameplay features not included in the design document.

Beta Testing: These tests are carried out by an external team of players, whether they are hired for the occasion or be a component of the project group (group DA). From these tests must leave the game with the least amount of minor defects and no medium or critical defect.
